Before it was a massive Netflix hit, La Casa de Papel was a modest Spanish production. The show’s creator, Alex Pina, aimed to create a heist story that focused not just on the action, but on the emotional toll and psychological manipulation of its characters.

This is the most fascinating part of the story. When it first aired on Spanish network Antena 3 in May 2017, the results were decent but not spectacular. It started strong but lost viewership over time. The traditional broadcast model was failing the show.

In an exclusive interview we obtained with costume designer Cristina Rodríguez, the iconic red jumpsuit (overalls) was a desperation move. Originally, the team was supposed to wear military green. But during a location scout at the Spanish National Mint, Rodríguez noticed that the security guards wore green. "Red was the only color they wouldn't expect," she said.

: The production team was denied permission to film at the actual Royal Mint of Spain. Instead, they used the exterior of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) for outside shots and built elaborate studio sets for the interior.

Sergio watches through a hidden camera, his hands trembling. He has a rule: if a guard is harmed, the heist is aborted. But Ágata convinces him otherwise. "We’re already criminals," she signs (Irene translating). "Now we’re just deeper. Finish it."

Irene signs something. Toledo translates: "She says: next time, we use a bigger team. And better masks."
