Perhaps the most distinctive feature of KMS is how it handles activation duration. When a client computer successfully activates against a KMS host, the software is activated for (approximately six months). Once per week—specifically, every seven days—the client software attempts to reconnect to the KMS activation server. When successful, it resets the 180-day timer. If the software goes 180 days without activating, it enters a 30-day grace period and displays warning messages before eventually entering a reduced-functionality mode.
